Looking for a function to validate an email address. By this I don't mean the format of the email address, but whether the email address is of a valid user on the given the domain. And that the domain exists.

search www.aspin.com for that sort of thing. Problem with it is it can't always work and a lot of valid emails won't be allowed.

it is the nature of different email servers and what they support and do not support. My guess is 20% of valid emails won't pass.

best thing to do is to allow them to do whatever it is they are doing but keep it in pending state..... check for valid email format at this time as well.

Then to make sure the email they used is real send a validiation email of sorts to them where they have to click on a special link back to your site with a code only your database knows in order to prove the fact that the email they used is real.... and therefore take the action out of pending state

This is most often used in signup scenarios for forums and what not. You never see them doing what you asked about because it won't work for too many people.
